About clockswatches.comThis web site was started in 1997 and it holds information that we have found about various clock and watchmakers, and so far has 31,961 records in it's database. The information comes from listings published in books and trade directories that we have in our library, giving dates that makers are known to have been working. At the moment, the database includes 28,417 individual trade directory entries from 320 trade directories and more detailed biographies for 3544 makers and retailers.
The information is not necessarily all there is to know about the maker, but it is a digest of all we have found in our researches. ![]() Magazines For Sale Click here for a list of duplicate magazines we are selling for as little as 99p each! A Maker was born in 1796. He was a clock and watch maker working
in Somewhere at from about 1833, at 20 Some Road from 1834-7, Some Street in
1841, back at 20 Some Road in 1848 and 1855 and 41 Some Road in 1864.
According to one source he married Ann, a local Somewhere girl in 1801, this
means he married at the age of 5, and seems to have been working up until about
1864. A Maker was not born in Another Place but in Somewhere.
The 1841 census has him age 45 living at Some Street with Ann Maker, (70) and
Ann (40). The 1851 census gives more details. Joseph (55) a watchmaker employing
2 men was living with his sister, Ann (50) plus a lodger and a servant. Going
back to the 1841 returns it is fairly safe to assume that the younger Ann is
sister, not wife, as mentioned in some books, and the older Ann was probably his
mother.
They do not seem to appear in any later census returns.

Notes:
Due to the dynamic nature of the addition of Trade Directories to our library,
these results may show additional dates to the text above.
Some maker's names may have a number after them, i.e. Doe, John(1). This means
that the maker was listed at more than one address in a trade directory so we
have highlighted this to show that the different addresses have been proved to
be the same maker.

The above information and dates are correct to the best of our knowledge based on the current books etc in our library at the time this page was last written or amended. Please be aware that any dates given are not necessarily the start and finish dates of this maker, they are just the dates that it is likely that he was working based on the information we have found. These are taken from trade directories etc and it is quite possible that they were working for longer periods than shown above.
